Just when I thought that we are done taking care and changing diapers because our youngest is already 5 years old, here comes a new challenge.
Last month my brother gave my sons a new playmate. Her name is Mooch, a Pug dog. Mooch is very playful and lovable dog. My kids love to play and feed her. But recently, I noticed that her coat is shedding, I got worried and decided to bring her to the Vet.
The Vet told us that the coat shedding of a Pug is just normal especially during summer. But the Vet wanted to make sure that the shedding is really normal or caused by some fungal infection. The Vet decided to take a cytology test to verify the cause of Mooch coat shedding.
The result confirmed that Mooch is positive for Demodex mites.
What is Demodex Mites, anyway?
Demodex Mites are also known as skin mites. They are tiny pests that thrive on the skin of all breeds of dogs. A canine with a healthy immune system normally does not experience any discomfort from the presence of these pet mites. However, if the dog’s resistance to infection and disease is weakened in some manner, dog mites can become extremely painful and will eventually develop into the condition known as mange.
If your pet is dealing with mites of this type, here are some ways to treat the condition.At this stage, the vet is likely to recommend a three-fold treatment process to handle the demodex mites.
- Medicated shampoos help to flush out the mites lodged in the pores, as well as any other debris that is clogging the pores.
- An ointment applied to the surface of the skin after bathing helps to ease the redness and prevent the pores from filling with more debris from the crusty patches.
- Finally, oral medications help to support the work of the weakened immune system and restore balance to the pet’s health. This range of treatment often requires several weeks to completely rid the pet of mange, but some improvement is usually seen within a couple of days.
The Vet told us that she need to give Mooch Ivermectin injection and medicated bath once a week for 6 consecutive weeks, plus the vitamins and anti-histamine.
Poor Moochie baby, for now we cannot hug her or even let her play inside the house.
