A hidden cause of weight gain may make dropping 25 pounds as easy as giving up your favorite vegetables.

So says Rudy Rivera, M.D., who maintains food intolerance are to blame for many of the weight problems people suffer. In his book Your Hidden Food Allergies Are Making You Fat, co-authored by Roger D. Deutsch, he tells of hos own struggle with being overweight. Once he identified his food culprits — among them, carrots, broccoli, and green beans — he says he finally slimmed down and felt healthy.

True food allergies cause immediate reactions such as hives or wheezing, and can be life-threatening. But when you’re sensitive to a certain food, the reaction is not as obvious, Rivera says. It might not appear until hours or days later; and by then you wouldn’t think of connection it to something you ate. Even so, an allergic-type reaction is invading your body. Your white blood cells can swell and burst, irritating the other cells. The result? You may feel exhausted, have a migraine, or keep gaining weight.

Rivera believes a lot of obesity is linked to this food sensitivity cycle. He explains that after your body reacts to an offending food, it becomes a low in serotonin — a feel-good chemical that has a calming effect on the brain. Because eating carbohydrates can raise serotonin levels, you find yourself craving things like sugary snacks. Even worse, you’ll probably crave the very foods you’re sensitive to.

But you can break the cycle by figuring out which foods your body can’t process. You can try eliminating foods from your diet one at a time to see if you notice any improvement, but this can be difficult if you’re sensitive to several foods. Rivera recommends the ALCAT test, a blood test for food intolerance. Along with identifying your problem foods, it tests for sensitivity to molds, chemicals such as preservatives, and food dyes. Rivera says once he stopped eating his trigger foods, he easily lost 25 pounds in a couple of months.

But you have to stay away from your problem foods for at least three months, he says. After that, you can eat small amounts of the food again, but only occasionally. To avoid reactions, you should rotate foods so you never eat any food more than once every four days, he notes.

Let’s admit the fact that we sometimes (if not all the time) get frustrated when our child wiggles around and play with their food while eating. Such behavior can really test our patience with them. Most of the time children refuse or demand certain food. Some children eat a lot but more often they tend to eat little.

It might help to know that these behavior of the children are normal. Parents should not be stress out but instead should deal with these situations calmly.

Try these tactics to reduce the stress and tensions triggered when feeding your kids:

Lead by example. Be a role model in practicing good eating habits. The best role models for good eating habits are the adults and older children. Older children who have been allowed to choose what they want to eat are less likely to criticize a food, discouraging other children from eating it, too. Show your children that you eat fruits and vegetables with every meal (if you don’t, they won’t!).

Let a child be a child. Expect and be patient with child-like table manners.Be patient with children’s idiosyncransies. A child may think a sandwich isn’t really a sandwich unless it’s cut diagonally, want milk served in one cup and juice in another, or expect the customary place mat same side up every time. For the child, these are important parts of the meal. These needs generally fade overtime.

Be consistent with meal schedules. Serve meals on a regular time, preferably before the children get overly hungry, tired and/or irritable. When children refuses to eat a regular meal or snack and then return to the kitchen just as it’s cleaned up asking for something to eat, tell them pleasantly that the next meal or snack will be forthcoming at the usual time. The keyword here is “pleasantly”. A child will not starve in that short time and will learn to observe a regular eating schedule.

Make mealtimes safe and comfortable. Select chairs, tables and eating utensils suitable in structure and size for children.Make the child’s chair a comfortable height. Provide a foot support to prevent leg fatigue. Provide tip-and spill-proof glasses for drinks.

Serve enticing dishes/foods.Whenever appropriate, arrange dishes attractively on plates to stimulate children’s appetite. Make fruits and vegetables interesting to eat. Cut fruits and vegetables in small fancy-shaped pieces.

Keep dishes simple-flavored. Children like dishes that are not spicy and strong-tasting. Children usually do not like spicy or hot seasoned foods until they are elementary-school age or even older.

Make mealtimes pleasant and enjoyable. Encourage a happy talk to promote good appetite among children. When children finish quickly or eat little or nothing, have them stay at the table for a few minutes and talk pleasantly about the day’s activities and tomorrow’s plans. Mealtimes are not occasions for discipline or unpleasant discussion.

Eating should be a pleasurable experience. If you’re nagging or arguing with your children, it’s because you’re allowing it to happen. Keep table conversation light and fun, and encourage everyone to participate. And for the last tip, try to not argue with spouses while eating. Resist to handle any differences after mealtime much more away from the children.

A lot of your child’s daily activities are using their mouths. The earliest pleasures, joys and sadness come through the mouth. Eating is a lifetime joy. Hence, a child uses a mouth also for talking, for conveying feelings, and for presenting warmth.

Going to the dentist seems to be one of greatest fears in childhood. Fears on someone probing inside the mouth, puts fingers and utensils in it are unwanted memories. To beat this kind of phobia, pre-hand teaching on a dentist appointment is essential to the child. As they get the habit of going to the dentist on a regular basis, they will overcome this fears and have a friendlier appointment basing on what you have taught them.

A colorful clinic illustration is also very helpful to encourage comfort during an appointment. This should be pre-presented to the child and include the dentist’s office with clear lights, up/down dental chair, tray of dental utensils, water squirter and air hoses that can also act like a vacuum cleaner for exiting saliva disposals. Another concern is the bib. It can make your child feel like a baby again. Or the bright lighting on the dental chair can distress them. Trivial cases like this can be serious concerns if you take them for granted.

Furthermore, your children will meet many more health care professionals like dentists and dental hygienists while they grow up. Hence, the value of taking care of their teeth and regular dentist check-ups will be accounted for in time. They will even more crave on healthy foods, brush and floss habitually. In their adult age stage, they will take good care of themselves.

As parents, you too experience a lot of memories and apprehensions on drillings, needles or pains, while in a dental check-up. This can be a hindrance in teaching a child to overcome dental fears. Basic fact is that the present dentistry varies from what was then back when you were young and being attended by a dentist. Modern times have come up with new procedures that treat children teeth complaints in simple and painless methods. During this circumstance, the parents’ support will be more than ever caring for their child. Showing comfort and security with a dentist or hygienist as well as along with personally being right there with your child is the best emotional support of all.

You can follow these helpful hints in preparation of your child’s dentist appointment:

Show your children the things he/she will see in the dentist clinic or office. Use creative photos of the dentist clinic or office. You can look these on the internet or in a library. Another plus factor in comforting the child before a trip to the dentist is thru additional coaching lessons on what a waiting room looks like and the allowed time for the child to wait in here during an appointment. Bringing toys or a notebook is also a good idea for pastime activities, but only if there will be none of those in the clinic.

Role playing is a very good way to teach a child on a dental check-up scene. When the child acts on being a dentist, he/she takes lead of what happens and, thus, by the time there is a dental check-up, the child might not feel the same apprehensions now that they are the patients. Moreover, prior to your child’s first dental check-up, take him/her along with you during your dental check-ups, so that they will get an idea. You can contact and inform your family dentist or hygienist ahead of time, during the instances that your child might suffer from anxiety in his/her dental check-up. They like to be told if you or your child has special concerns.

Making it a habit to brush teeth while at home is a key to possessing healthy teeth. This is a primary concern in children. While pushing your children on observing a proper tooth brushing habit, you can finish the job yourself sometimes for them, including flossing especially if they have braces. Children usually think that these tasks are “grownup” things to do.

Give them nutritious foods like milk, fruits and vegetables that can aid in having stronger and healthier teeth. These can be their merienda or desserts.

Educate your child on the different nutritious foods and junk foods like candies and sweets, which they should only be allowed to consume on specific occasions.

Brushing teeth and rinsing the mouth subsequent to consuming meals or sweet and sticky foods is a must.

A lot goes in planning a camping trip with kids. They love the outdoor and have fun in the active sports or games they can do there. We all desire to be with nature. Hiking, swimming, cooking, barbeque, overnight sleeping, hunting and lot’s of stuff for the outdoor fanatics awaits a perfect picnic.

Why not scribble a snippet of a list on camping gears kids should bring during their weekend camping get out?

Here are the top 10 important kid’s camping gears:

Play hut tents – A sleeping and game crib in one! It can come in anime characters, choose your favorite one. It can even come with window holes.

Sleeping bags – The little campers are fond of outdoor sleeping. Cool bags are available in assorted colors!

Cute camping outfits – The weather is not always warm, so please do take in mind to dress up your kids appropriately especially during the cold seasons.

Camping backpacks – A handful of hiking gadgets and tons of necessary things are needed to be carried by the little campers. Choose the lightest and roomy backpack that’s a must for the little hikers.

Nature lighting – Kids can’t carry all and shouldn’t make lighting heavy on their backs. A kid’s illumistick is best during a night out camping.

Medical aids – you never know when you’re kid’s going to break a joint or ankle. The trusty travel first aid tool kit is just what the little campers’ need.

Picnic baskets – Chow time is the favorite part of all picnic getaways. Sandwiches, fresh fruits, juices, cakes, snacks and sweets are delighted on, aside from barbeques and outdoor fire cooking. Light and cool any child would care to bring this on camping trips. Aside from the cuddly toys that can come with it, it’s also fitted for sufficient food storage.

Sun Blocks – The sun gives us sunshiny smiles, but unavoided times it becomes harsh. Use this to prevent sun burns and sometimes insect bites.

Binoculars – Adventurers love sightseeing milieus and green forests. For increase distance visibility, asks your kids to bring with them binoculars, so that it would be a complete trekking zest.

Handy Toys – Kids find it irresistible to play, wherever they go, hence camping is no exception. Allow them to bring a couple of handy toys they could enjoy with while at camp. Examples of outdoor toys kids would adore to bring are puppet theaters & puppets, garden caddy & tools, doll tea set for girls, sensory stepping stones and the large sand molds.

Camping can be enjoyable without stress. Far from home is an act of independence from your kids. The above tips to bring in a camping make it pleasurable for the occasion. Promise yourself, as parents, a just right camping experience for your kids. Don’t forget it.

Now are you prepared to bring your kids to nature’s wild life? Learn by heart these things and teach them to your children, for a successful and great camping ever!

Growing Pains Facts

Growing Pains aren’t actually a disease, so kids you don’t have to worry on it. Even a physician consultation isn’t compulsory. Nevertheless, it can definitely be hurting and upsetting. In the ages of 3 to 12 years old, kids can suffer from this stage of growing up. The real thing is that physicians don’t actually deem that growing pain is a pain in growing. Yet, stories told that in truth it stops when the growth stage is finished. During the teenager stage, almost a whole percentage of the teenagers don’t suffer from it any longer.

Pains are felt in the legs. The front of the thighs or the upper side of the legs, calves or the back side of the legs below the knees, and right at the back of the knees are the areas of the body that hurt. For most cases, it happens in both leg parts.

Kids usually feel the growing pains during bedtime story telling, when they are about to go to sleep. Or it can even happen in the middle of the night, waking them up from a good sleep. What is good is that when they get up from bed during mornings, it won’t feel painful anymore.

Growing Pains Reasons

Muscles are the ones hurting in growing pains and not the bones or joint areas. And because of this, a lot of physicians say that kids only suffer from it, when they get tired from a sport or trekking activity or any strenuous goings-on. By the time they sleep at night, kids are complaining on leg aches and pains.

Healing Growing Pains

Pain medicines can reduce the muscle sensations that the kids is experiencing. Some of these pills are acetaminophen or ibuprofen. On the other hand though, aspirin intakes are prohibited to kids, because they might undergo from a rare severe illness - Reye syndrome.

Follow these steps to stop the pains:

Warm the hurting area with a heating pad

Do stretching activities with the legs, same exercises in gym

Give a good rub down on the pain spot

Physician is needed by the time, the kid has already a fever, limping behavior, or swollen/red/puffed up legs.

Still, growing shouldn’t hinder kids’ daily fun stuffs like running and playing. Develop a healthy communication relationship with your kids, so that when they went through the stage of growing pains, they will know what to tell you. Ensure them that it is just normal, or can even be absent for some kids. They can outgrow growing pains.

My youngest son was craving for mango juice last Saturday while we were having dinner in one of the most popular malls in the metro. Since it’s almost closing time when he requested for a fresh mango juice, we had to scrambled all over the malls on where to get the precious juice my son is craving for.

Finally, after two floors and three closed fresh juice stores , we finally find one that was still opened – and that’s Frutas. It’s one of the well known kiosks around the mall that sells fresh juice. We ordered 4 medium cup size of their mango juice. And then, we went back to the restaurant where we ordered our dinner.

You may be wondering why all the fussed about the juice. It’s simply because that I taught my kids to drink juices – better fresh – than soda. And did you know that we don’t store any sodas in our fridge? I’m sure you know the reason for this.

While sipping the mango juice, I’ve noticed the label on the cup. It’s written on the label what are the benefits of drinking (or eating of course) the different kind of fruits.

See the picture of the cup, which I personally shot, with the label on it. You might have difficulties in reading the label or not, but I’ll write it down here anyway.

Food For Thoughts

Strawberry – a good refreshing cleanser for the whole body

Orange - helps in cleaning the digestive system

Melon – a gentle laxative that stimulates action on the kidneys

Watermelon – stimulates the appetite , while cleansing the bladder and kidneys

Apple – helps relieve indigestion, keep cholesterol level stable and suppress the appetite

Banana – an excellent aid in digestion

Mango – gives energy, vitality and promotes healthy skin

Papaya – an energy booster that stimulates the appetite and cleanses the internal organs

Pineapple – aids in the digestion of protein.

Grape – an excellent metabolism stimulator

These “thoughts” are not new anyways. For years, we’ve been taught to do one simple thing in order to strengthen our bodies, prevent and cure various ailments.

Many kids don’t like eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Being a mom, we have to give our kids their fare share of a healthy life by introducing them to the best alternatives – that is literrally turn lemon into lemonade. Cheers!

It is the time of the year again when colds and coughs quickly spread around. There are so many misconceptions about common colds and the sad thing is, these erroneous beliefs are so “common”. Many are mistaken that some colds were caused by bacteria, but in fact, colds are actually caused by viruses rather than a bacteria.

For children, and adults too, in order to win the battle against cold, they must first strengthen their immune system before it strikes them. Since cold is caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t help. There was even a widrawal of the over-the-counter cold medicines for children under 2 years old.

“First and foremost, we want parents to know that no matter what, most viral infections will get better in threee to five days and go away completely within two weeks,” says Dr. Dennis Kuo, a pediatrician at John’s Hopkins Children’s Center. “The second thing they need to remember is fluids, fluids, fluids.”

Hopkins Children’s doctors offer the following advice to parents:

Give your child plenty of fluids.

Avoid giving straight water to children under 6 months because their kidneys are not mature enough to handle too much water.

To help relieve congestion, use saline nasal drops up to four times a day and a cool-mist humidifier at night.

Use baby acetaminophen to relieve high fever in infants older than 3 months.

Use children’s ibuprofen to take down high fever in children over 6 months. Typically, a temperature over 101 is considered a high fever, but tolerance varies from child to child. Follow your gut on this one.

Don’t over-wrap a feverish infant and don’t cover the face and head. Over-wrapping prevents proper cooling.

Call a pediatrician if:

Your child is younger than 3 months and has a fever over 100.4 when taken rectally.

Your child over 3 months has a fever higher than 104 when taken rectally.

Your child hasn’t had a wet diaper in six hours, a sign of dehydration. Other signs of dehydration include dry mouth, fussiness and producing few or no tears when crying.

Your child’s symptoms don’t improve in three to five days.

Your child is lethargic, particularly with NO fever present.

Your child is unusually cranky and does not calm down when picked up and held.

Your child’s breathing is rapid or labored.

Your child refuses to drink.

And as a suggestion for the parents, just let your kids be active! As long as they are healthy, your child’s immune system can fight the cold on its own.
