I saw a lady officer (sorry I forgot the name) of the The Department of Health (DOH) in the news the other night reiterating the warning against the use of artificial sweetener “ma
gic sugar,” citing the product causes cancer.
Together, the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD), in its advisory warned against the use of magic sugar as food sweetener due to its evidence of carcinogenicity in animals.
What is Magic Sugar?
Magic Sugar is an artificial sugar that is also called Sodium Cyclamate. It is 30–50 times sweeter than ordinary sugar and is less expensive than most sweeteners too.
It was intended to be used intended to mask the bitterness of certain drugs such as antibiotic.
Banned Substance
In the 1960’s cyclamate was banned from the United States because researchers found that “cyclamate/ saccharin mixtures” cause cancer and, its sale and use has been banned by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.
In the Philippines, aside from DOH and BFAD, there is also an ongoing operation by the Bureau of Customs in prohibiting the importation of the magic sugar.
Let’s guard our family’s health by being careful and vigilant against ambulant vendors using “magic sugar” in the drinks they sell.
